For many years designers in a variety markets have searched for ways to reduce overall product weight and magnesium, at one-fourth the mass of steel and two-thirds that of aluminum, fulfills their needs.

Magnesium is stronger than aluminum and is excellent for absorbing vibration. It can also improve die life in most casting applications because it is less abrasive and this, in turn, leads to reduced manufacturing costs. Magnesium can be highly susceptible to galvanic corrosion, and its properties change with every new blend that is created. It is also brittle and does not react well to most thread-forming screws. Debris generated by a thread-cutting screw could interfere with certain functions and would obviously be unacceptable.

Mag-Form® Thread Forming Screws are specifically designed with a broader flank angle to eliminate tapping operations while forming strong threads in conventional magnesium die-castings and similar materials. The design also minimizes debris, making Mag-Form® screws the optimal solution for critical applications such as electronics and air bag modules. Available in sizes from MG1.0 to MG 16 these screws are coated with a large variety of finishes and selectively sprayed plastics to minimize galvanic corrosion.
