In-place or the as-assembled costs of fastening can often be significantly reduced through the use of a thread-cutting fastener for plastic too hard to form threads in. The major cost of savings, although by no means the only one, is using thread-cutting screws for eliminating costs required to use standard threaded screws in pre-tapped holes. Because of the unique characteristics involved in the use of thread-cutting screws, proper fastener selection is critical. Improper selection can cause catastrophic failure.

The fastener's general performance requirements are to cut a mating thread in nut material with a suitable pilot hole, without deforming its own thread or breaking during assembly, and to maintain design preload during service. The goal is to select a fastener that meets each of the application's functional performance requirements during installation and in service.
